IPL PERTH

Frequently asked questions

Can IPL be used on benign vascular lesions?

Ageing, exposure to the elements (especially the sun) and other factors can lead to broken capillaries and blood vessels on the face, a condition known as telangiectasias. Sometimes this manifests as spider veins.  In other cases, broken capillaries result in a diffused redness in the skin known as erythema. Both conditions are a source of social embarrassment for many people, as is rosacea, another common skin condition characterised by diffused erythema. All respond well to treatment with IPL (see testimonial above).

What is 'photorejuvenation'?

'Photorejuvenation' is a non-ablative, non-invasive treatment that rids the skin of red and brown pigment. It also smooths skin texture and evens out the complexion to create a more youthful appearance. IPL in Perth is a safe, effective and popular method of improving signs of ageing on the face, neck, chest (décolletage), arms and hands. An in-clinic procedure, it is performed by Karen Bowen. Some clients require several treatments, while others experience great results from just one (see testimonial above).

What causes freckles and sun spots, and is IPL the best way to treat them?

Freckles are flat tan, brown or black spots that appear over time on skin exposed to the sun. They are common among those with lighter skin who sunburn easily. Age spots, which appear later in life, are superficial collections of the skin pigment melanin that occur within the epidermis (top layer of the skin). Freckles and age spots, classified as symptoms of photo-ageing, are commonly found on the face, hands and chest.

With freckles, the most conventional treatment is bleaching agents, which aim to fade them to match the surrounding skin. However, these agents can lighten or darken the skin around the freckles so the freckles stand out even more. Occasionally, too, bleaching agents cause rashes or chemical burns. Some people have had success with alpha hydroxy acids, combined with avoidance of the sun and the use of sunblock, or with prescription-strength retinoids.

Other modern methods of lightening freckles include freezing them with liquid nitrogen, the use of strong acid peels, or ablative laser treatments. Unfortunately, the latter three treatments, while generally effective, can damage healthy skin and cause scarring; also, recovery times are lengthy. IPL in Perth is a new, safe treatment option for those wanting to fade their freckles or sun spots with no downtime.

What are the other advantages of IPL?

IPL in Perth can be used to effectively treat multiple symptoms and areas of skin during a single session. In addition, IPL in Perth is gentle, non-invasive and safe, so there is no downtime. In fact, many people schedule IPL sessions during their lunch breaks. Because IPL treatments are customised to each individual's specific skin type and condition, we can achieve the best results possible (see testimonials above).

Is IPL right for me?

Anyone who has ageing, sun-damaged skin or unwanted hair is a candidate for IPL. However, the treatment is contra-indicated for those who are pregnant, who use tanning booths or who have had cancer. Your consultation with Karen Bowen will provide all the information you require. During that consultation your skin will be examined using Beau Visage, a technology that can 'see' 2 mm beneath the surface of the skin to generate images of blood flow, pigmentation and sun damage. Karen will then determine whether IPL is right for you and, if so, will perform a test patch prior to treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Some people require several IPL procedures for optimal results. That said, clients are treated on an individual basis and different treatment plans apply for each.

How will my skin look after IPL?

You may notice minor reddening or inflammation of the skin, which could last from a few hours to a few days. There is no cause for alarm, however, as this is normal and will settle down. IPL for pigmentation has a 'micro-crusting' effect and the pigment will darken. Again, there is no cause for alarm; micro-crusting takes between 3 and 7 days to resolve, revealing lighter, healthy-looking skin beneath.

Is IPL expensive?

The cost of IPL in Perth will vary depending on where on the body the procedure is performed, the severity of the skin condition being treated and other factors. Compared to many other aesthetic procedures, however, IPL is quite affordable. As a rule it costs more than microdermabrasion and some chemical peels but less than laser resurfacing and other cosmetic surgeries.
